PACIFIERS How are pacifiers cleaned? Before first use and at regular intervals thereafter, boil the pacifier in water for five minutes or sterilise. Water may enter the nipple – remove by gently squeezing the teat. Occasionally rinse the pacifier under running water.
How often should the pacifier be replaced? Check the pacifier before each use - especially when baby is teething - and throw away at the first signs of damage or weakness. For hygienic reasons and baby’s safety a new pacifier should replace the old after one to two months of usage at the latest.
Can babies swallow the pacifier? No. All MAM pacifiers are developed in cooperation with medical experts and comply with international safety standards and minimal size regulations for pacifiers. It is impossible for babies to swallow them. In rare cases children manage to get the entire pacifier in their mouths. However, even in such a case, breathing is still possible due to the generous air holes in the MAM pacifier shields. Parents can gently remove the pacifier.
What difference is there between latex and silicone nipples? Latex is a soft, resilient, natural rubber. After extensive usage, this material ages and must be replaced. Up to now, there is no clear scientific evidence for a connection between latex nipples and latex allergy. Parents who wish to avoid latex simply choose silicone nipples. Silicone is an intensively tested, well-tolerated plastic that does not age. This material is however not quite as bite resistant and a little less elastic than latex.
What difference is there between standard silicone and MAM Silk TeatTM silicone? MAM has developed an innovative silicone nipple: the MAM Silk TeatTM. It is softer than standard silicone and its patented surface lends baby a more familiar feel. Babies love the soft MAM Silk TeatTM and can keep it in their mouths easily.
Is the shape of the pacifier and nipple important? Yes, only orthodontic pacifiers support baby’s healthy development. MAM combines medical know-how with innovative design to create pacifiers that give babies the best start in life. All MAM pacifiers have symmetrical nipples: there is no ‘top’ or ‘bottom’ – so the pacifier is always ‘the right way up’. The extra soft nipple adapts perfectly to baby’s jaw. MAM designers have created pacifiers in different sizes – corresponding ideally to baby’s development.
The use of pacifiers and healthy development – what should be borne in mind? Babies love sucking. It relaxes and calms them – when drinking as well as when sucking a pacifier. Orthodontic pacifiers, if no longer used by the child’s third birthday, support healthy development. When the child wants to sleep, needs comforting or wants to relax, he or she will be happy about having a pacifier. When playing, it is as unnecessary as when attempting to talk. Because it is much easier to stop a child sucking a pacifier than their thumb, paediatric doctors recommend soothers.
How often and for how long are children allowed to suck a pacifier daily? All children are different – and have their very individual needs. Sucking calms and relaxes babies and should therefore not be limited. The orthodontic MAM pacifiers support healthy development.
Do children need a pacifier? Most children have a strong sucking need that goes way beyond feeding. Because this is important for development, it should not be limited. Babies that do not get a pacifier often fulfil their need with their thumb. Thumb sucking is very difficult to hinder, so paediatric doctors recommend pacifiers. Babies that do not want a pacifier should not be forced.
Do MAM pacifiers contain softening agents? No. MAM products do not contain softening agents. MAM only uses materials that meet highest expectations and safety standards. So MAM products guarantee babies the best start in life.
How to wean children off the pacifier:
* Limit where the pacifier is used: baby is only allowed the pacifier in bed
* Symbolically give the pacifier away: the child will be happy about an agreed something in return
* Stories and fairy tales about stopping pacifier use support parents
* Strengthen the child’s self-confidence: big girls and boys don’t need pacifiers!
* Dentists also have helpful hints about stopping pacifier use

What are nitrosamines and how does MAM check their intensity? Nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances are chemicals that are found in such things as fried bacon, smoked meat and rubber products – like latex nipples. Sucking on a pacifier can release small amounts of nitrosamines. Latex, however, contains far fewer nitrosamines than grilled meat or cosmetic products for example. MAM supports healthy development for babies: this is why all our raw materials are strictly controlled to ensure they have the lowest possible nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances value. At production all nipples are ‘leached’. Explained simply, this means that with a special method they are washed for 48 hours. This ‘leaching’ removes the majority of the nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances. At the same time also reducing the risk of a latex allergy. MAM regularly has cargos of nipples – complete production runs of nipples – controlled by an independent laboratory. Always boil pacifiers before first use – for additional child safety!

MAM Clip: Are MAM pacifier clips safe for babies? Yes. MAM designers have developed a clip that meets all safety standards and at the same time also looks stylish. The length of the band on the MAM clip means it is impossible to wrap it around baby’s neck. This is the reason why it should never be lengthened or clipped to loose parts or strings! Check the band for damage before use and always clip on firmly!
Is the MAM pacifier clip for use only with MAM pacifiers? The clip can also be used for other pacifiers. Although the innovative silicone ring on the MAM clip was designed for the knobs of MAM pacifiers and is a perfect fit for them.
How is the MAM pacifier clip cleaned? The clip can be washed simply with warm water and a mild detergent. It cannot be boiled, steam sterilised or microwave sterilised.
Is the MAM pacifier clip free from harmful substances? Yes. The band material complies with all international regulations and meets the OEKO-Tex standards for materials tested for harmful substances as well as the requirements of the German “Bedarfsgegenständeverordnung” for the use of Azo-colourants.

BREASTFEEDING What is bisphenol A (BPA)? Bisphenol A (BPA) is required to produce the plastic polycarbonate. This plastic is used to make among other things food packaging, plastic tableware and baby bottles. Studies have not yet been completed, but some researchers think that traces of BPA are gradually breaking away from the plastic and getting into the body. This might result in damage to health. Definitive scientific clarification is still being worked on. But parents are concerned, and a number of countries are already talking about BPA bans.
